TMJ Disorder - An Overview
Your temporomandibular joints, or TMJs, are the joints that connect your jawbone to the skull. They are located on each side of the head, in front of your ears. Your TMJs allow you to move your jaw up and down, side to side, and back and forth, enabling you to chew, swallow, talk, and yawn. TMJ disorder, or TMD, can cause debilitating pain in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. It usually results from problems in the muscle, bone, or tissues in and around your TMJs.
Symptoms of TMJ disorder include clicking, popping, or grinding when opening or closing the mouth or chewing or yawning. Patients often report pain in or around the jaw, head, ears, temples, face, or neck, swelling of the jaw or face, and ringing in the ears. TMD can result in your jaw locking, and your upper and lower teeth may no longer fit together the way they should. The pain or discomfort may worsen when you chew or sleep or when you're stressed.
The causes of TMJ pain are often difficult to determine. The pain and discomfort may be due to genetics, wear and tear of the joint, a blow to the head or face, stress, or an uneven bite. Some people with TMJ pain tend to clench or grind their teeth in their sleep, a condition called bruxism.
How Is TMJ Pain Treated?
Our experienced team will evaluate your concerns and work with you to create a custom treatment plan to relieve your TMD symptoms. The following are two of the most popular methods that help our valued patients enjoy an improved quality of life.
Night Guards: If your TMJ disorder is caused by chronic nighttime teeth grinding and clenching, we may recommend a custom oral appliance called a night guard. Your custom oral appliance will help reduce muscle tension, relieve the stress on your jaw, and prevent damage from grinding and clenching.
Botox® Treatment: Botox® not only smooths away lines, folds, and wrinkles but also offers an effective solution to treat chronic TMD. When injected into targeted areas, the powerful neuromodulator derived from botulinum toxin Type A relaxes the muscles, relieving your pain and discomfort. Most patients report significant symptom relief after treatment, especially those with TMJ pain resulting from teeth grinding or stress disorders.
